CHATTING FABULOUSLY W. RAUL ANTHONY
I met Raul Anthony on Twitter, not because we randomly started following each other but by us knowing the same people but not knowing each other. Fast forward to now, Raul and I have spent a number of days together eating fabulously and talking about our entrepreneurial dreams. Of course Raul is a foodie which is always a big plus in my eyes, but what I love about Raul is the fact that he had a plan and stuck to it, even when things didn’t seem to be going well. I remember talking to him on sleepy nights where his bag samples where coming in and he had to review them before the next business day. Now with Raul Anthony Inc. officially up and running, I chat fabulously with Raul about how and why he created a men’s accessory line with no formal training, what he will never eat and his food guilty pleasures.
Where Did You Get Your Education?
Raul A. - I had the pleasure of attending NYC public school until high school, where I went to St. Raymond HS in the Bronx. In 2002, I attended John Jay College studying Forensic Science and Psychology. Realizing my creative potential, I decided to pursue something that better suited my strengths and ambitions. Regarding fashion design, I am completely self taught. Thankfully in today's information age you can research anything you want to learn as long as your passion is present.
What is Your Current Position?
Raul A. - It depends what day you ask this question but overall, an entrepreneur. Being that this and by this I mean Raul Anthony Inc. is a new venture, I am the wearer of many hats in which I truly enjoy. It's also very essential to have great people around you that genuinely want to work with the brand. The process happens to be my favorite part so far and it's been a blessing.
Tell Us About Raul Anthony Inc. ?
Raul A. - Raul Anthony Inc. is a brand of high quality development within obtainable means. We wanted to create items that are made well, look good and are practical for everyday use with our customer in mind. The community is very important to us as well and empowering the youth is a mission of ours as we continue to grow.
Starting Your Own Men’s Accessory Collection Is Major. What Inspired You To Start From Scratch?
Raul A. - Experiencing my parents own and operate businesses in the Soundview section of The Bronx was my foundation for venturing into my own entrepreneurial journey. Wearing great designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren who also hail from the borough inspired me to build something of my own. The early street wear scene in New York was also very pivotal, seeing young men and women from the inner city creating brands with a message while succeeding. Their presence in the industry made it feel obtainable for the likes of myself with a calling for creating.
How Did You Decide On What Pieces To Start Building?
Raul A. - We wanted to focus on sleek accessories to gradually build wardrobes. Classic staple pieces along with rich color palettes allow for the collection to be timeless. Versatility was also important in the sense that you can use the Clason Backpack for the office or the gym. The Underhill Scarf has been worn by men and women blurring the lines of both utility and demographic, in which we are proud.
What Makes You So Passionate About Incorporating The Bronx In Your Collection?
Raul A. - Being born and raised in the Bronx brought about rich experiences. Learning so much from them compelled me to celebrate the borough that helped shape who I am. The man and the brand share the same values, making it natural to represent where I came from while building where I am going.
What's in Your Fridge Right Now?
Raul A. - Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and fresh eggs are always stocked along with multi grain bread, salted whipped butter and chocolate almond milk for either overnight oats or a smoothie. I enjoy experimenting with sauces so there may be an eclectic array of those too, honey mustard being a favorite. Summer essentials would be poultry, mixed greens and fruits but in the winter I enjoy a churrasco steak with rice and beans.
What Do You Do To Have & Maintain A Fab Lifestyle?
Raul A. - In order to live a fab lifestyle you have to maintain a healthy mentality. Choosing to love yourself and what you believe in are essential and yes, it is a choice. Learn more about who you are by getting out of your comfort zone, experience new things, try different cuisines, travel and enjoy life. It's a beautiful thing once you really know who you are. Avoid comparing yourself to others and defy any obstacles placed before you. Recognize that you are designed to win.
What is Your Food Philosophy?
Raul A. - Being that my mom is a chef, I was spoiled with delicious meals throughout my childhood. Family members from all over the Bronx knew that dinner in our house was served at around 6:30 and they would come over to eat from time to time. I believe that's what food should do, bring the family together for laughs, discussions and general bonding. There's nothing like good company when good cooking is on the table.
What is Your Food Guilty Pleasure?
Raul A. - I definitely have a sweet tooth. I love chocolates and pastries. Tres Leche cake is one of my favorites also. I can go on and on but I'm a stop there.
Where Do You Go for A No Fail Meal?
Raul A. - If I'm ever in need of home style Latin cuisine, I can always go to Brisas del Caribe on Castle Hill Avenue. The oxtails and mofongo are favorites of mine. Actually everything is really good there and the portions are generous enough so there is always a little extra to take home with you.
What is Your Favorite Quote at The Moment?
Raul A. - "If you can accomplish your dream on your own, your dream is too small."
Finish this sentence....." I Will Never Eat...
Raul A. - ...anything cooked without love."
